On June 2 at the 2016 Cub Scout Cup Award, history was made by a Cub Scout Tiger team called “Eye of the Tigers” from Pack 48 of Canyon Country.
Cub Scout Cup is an all-day team event for cub scouts held in May each year at Hart Camp Grounds. This year the scouts persevered through 20 different events. The events included team events where the boys worked together to solve problems or physically achieve a goal. There were also individual competitions that challenged each scout alone and the cumulative score of the team was divided by the number of scouts in the challenge. There were relay races, a scavenger hunt, shooting competitions and mental challenges that tested each team to its limit. The Scores were added up for the team’s performance and skill and then weighed against other scouts in their rank. The ranks that competed were Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos. The ranks are determined by age of the scouts or the grade that they are in school. The Cub Scout Cup is awarded to the best score overall for each rank.
There is also another award in the Cub Scout Cup called the Cub Scout Spirit Award. Spirit is graded by the event leaders at each event. They look for the team that shows unity by matching t-shirts or costumes, team flag, team cheer and overall team spirit. The team spirit score can break a tie between two teams. The highest team spirit score will win the Cub Scout Cup Spirit Cup for each rank.
Since the event’s inception 11 years ago, there has never been a team that has won both the Cub Scout Cup and the Spirit Cup. The “Eye of the Tigers” from Pack 48 made history this year by winning the 2016 Cub Scout Cup and Spirit Cup for the Tiger rank. Congratulations to team “Eye of the Tigers” members – Hayden Beiter, Nickolas Cahill, Michael Delgadillo, Hudson Grillo, Chase Hutchison, Joey Meade, and Sebastian Villagrana – for an outstanding commitment to this competition as well as doing their best and never giving up. I would also like to say congratulations to all 420 Scouts that battled for hours in the sun, who also did their best and never gave up. Thank you to all the Boy Scouts and leaders who work so hard to make this event possible year after year.
