Scout Stuff You Should Know

Ken has been a member of Scouts Canada for most of his life; he joined Beaver Scouts at the age of 5, and progressed through the movement - Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers - until the age of 26; his last Scouting activity as a "youth" member was the 2007 World Jamboree. Thereafter, he took a brief hiatus from movement, but returned as a Scouter in 2012 when his daughter joined Beaver Scouts. As of this year, he will be taking on the additional role of a Cub Scouter, while also remaining involved with Beavers.

Colin has been a member of Scouts Canada for over 25 years. He joined Beaver Scouts at the age of 5, and aged out of Rover Scouts at the age of 26. Thereafter, he served his Scout Group - the 59th Greenfield/Royal Gardens, in Edmonton, Canada - in a number of capacities, including as a Scouter and as the Group Commissioner

The Scouting Stuff You Should Know show is an initiative to share and discuss Scouting with the world via digital media. The Scouting Stuff Team comprises representatives from both Scouts Canada and Boy Scouts of America, giving us the opportunity to compare and contrast the two Scouting movements.

Justin Dawson

Justin Dawson is the Founder and Station Manager of Scouting Radio. His radio background stems from a teenager. Justin is a Graduate of Maynooth University with a Masters Degree in TV & Radio Production.

Justin has been playing the game of Scouting since a Beaver at the age of 7. After his uncle Billy's death, as a young adult of 18,  he took the role of a Scoutmaster of a small Scout group based in Drimnagh which at the time had only 5 Scouts. Over a 10 year period Troop 44 Dublin, Baden-Powell Scouts grew to a Beaver colony, Wolf Cub Pack, Scout and Senior Scout Troop all with 30 members in each section.

In 2004, at 21 years of age Justin gained my Leader wood badge in Scouting for the Scout & Senior Scout section. He spent the summer that year in California with a week as a staff member at Camp Kern, a Boy Scouts of America camp in the Southern Sierra Mountains. Following this camp Justin spent 3 weeks in Yosemite National Park with Ben Walker, Director of the Tribal Wisdom Academy (formerly the Boy Scout Academy). Here he mastered my skills of bushcraft, survival, pioneering, fire by friction and "knot-fu" a concept of tying Scout knots in the quickest and easiest way.

He hiked Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. A hike which takes 24 hours to complete and you are nearly touching clouds at the summit, 8,200 feet.

During the centenary of Scouting in 2007 Justin was awarded the Medal of Merit for honorary service to Scouting. Within a year period he had increased the membership of the Baden Powell Scouts (UK) by 10% with an interactive website presence. I was honored to receive this medal from the late Lawrie 'Bob' Dring, president of the Baden-Powell Scouts on Brownsea Island, only days after the Scouting sunrise celebrations.

2010 seen the unfortunate closure of the Baden-Powell Scouts of Ireland after a decision by the volunteer board of Directors. However Justin continued his Scouting trail joining Scouting Ireland as a Cub Leader with 25th Dublin Mount Merrion and later 153rd Lusk. He has completed his Woodbadge with Scouting Ireland.

Justin is currently writing a book on his Scouting memories to be available soon. He presents regularly on Scouting Radio. Some of his previous broadcasts can be listened to below.
